Szmidt’s Old World Deli
Just down the street from Hough’s in Greenfiled is Szmidt’s Old World Deli. You might miss it if you’re not paying attention. But if you’re in the mood for a quality lunch or dinner, stop in.
The sandwich menu is extensive. Several kinds of homemade corned beef and pastrami, slow-roasted roast beef, turkey breast, and chicken sandwich options will make choosing hard. And don’t forget sides: homemade pierogies, cole slaw, potato salad, Mack n’ cheese, salads, and cucumbers. Yes, cucumbers! Marinated in a candied white vinaigrette with razor-sliced onions.
I couldn’t pass up the house-brined corned beef so I got the Hoya. This sandwich meant business. Corned beef was stacked high and Swiss cheese, 1000 dressing, and Szmidt’s sauerkraut oozed with each bite.
I also got pierogies because how do you pass on homemade pierogies? You don’t.
These are far from Mrs. T’s, folks. These were the real deal – homemade, thick dough, smooth, flavorful mashed potato-filled pierogies.
