National Ice Cream Month- Week 3
My pants are officially screaming at me to stop eating ice cream. But in the words of Miley… I can’t stop. And I won’t stop. Not until August 1st anyway.
Day 15: Custard’s First Stand in Bellevue would have went unnoticed to me since it’s in close proximity to Willow and anytime I’m anywhere in the vicinity I usually have steak on the brain. Thank goodness yinz told me about it! I love a good pun… and when my ice cream is coated in a secondary confectionary. DOUBLE DESSERT! This beaut was lemon chiffon soft serve dipped in chocolate.
Day 16: I went to the Rocks. McKees Rocks. Well, a little beyond, to Windgap. Didn’t even know that was a real place. Thank goodness for yinz telling me it existed. Remember When is a tiny little shop that is known for the biggest ice cream cone around. I opted for an equally decadent treat… the Funnel Cake Sundae. Banana soft serve atop a funnel cake with strawberries, whipped cream and nuts. Because I never carry cash on my person and because they only let you buy $10 worth of ice cream with plastic… I had to buy a quart of said banana soft serve. (Read: HAD to. Twist my arm.) Good thing I liked it… I’ll be eating it all throughout August.
Day 17: I celebrated my baby brother’s birthday a day early with Birthday Cake ice cream from Twisters in Bloomfield. Tucked away on a residential street, I’ve always been curious about Twisters. I’m not usually one for Birthday Cake ice cream, because despite my typical diet… I’m not 5. However, special occasion and all… IT HAD ACTUAL CAKE BITES IN IT.
Day 18: Big day for ice cream. First… it was brought to my delightful attention that Uber would be delivering ice cream all day. WHAT THE WHAT?! National Ice Cream Month just got serious. I got $25 worth of frozen treats delivered right to my grubby little mitts. (I shared with my co-workers!) And best of all… FREE SCHWAG. That fantastic ice cream cone printed sunglasses pouch is now a staple in my purse. Thanks UBER! (This was a one to grow on kind of ice cream treat. Thanks to pals Julie and Rachel for letting me know this was happening!)
Day 18: Now for the real ice cream for today. Birthday celebration ice cream post sushi induced coma (thanks Fukuda! We love you!) at Scoops. I tried Spumoni ice cream for the first time… definitely a new favorite of mine. And I couldn’t resist sprinkles. I said it was a celebration. Happy Birthday brother! Thanks for coming to visit PGH!
Day 19: This day involved an unnecessary trip to Lawrenceville to track down a Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwich. I arrived at 52nd Street Market to find them closed. And me without ice cream. I drowned my sorrows in pizza and beer at Caliente in Bloomfield and thankfully found myself at the Rivers Casino later that night. Instead of gambling, I spent my coin on coffee gelato. I like my money right where I can see it. On a spoon headed for my mouth.
This was another bonus treat. Everything I’m eating these days takes on the form of ice cream. This cookie loaded with frosting was from Prantl’s Bakery in Market Square!
Day 20: I was bound and determined to get a Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwich, so I headed back to 52nd Street Market on Sunday morning. Only to find that they were sold out! They must have felt bad for my sad, chubby face because they called up a few other locales and handed me this sweet sticker. They sent me on my merry way to Highland Park where there were ice cream sandwiches waiting! (Thanks for the sticker guys, you rule!)
Here she is! Finally! This was everything I was hoping it was going to be. Berry ice cream sandwiched between shortbread cookies. Perfect for summer.
Day 21: I found myself in Wexford for work on Monday and finished out the ice cream week with another one of your suggestions, at Any Given Sundae. I of course, had to get a sundae and went with the Tin Roof Sundae. Strawberry ice cream is my favorite, so that won out and was topped with hot fudge and Spanish peanuts. What a week!
Just a little over a week left of this crazy adventure and several awesome places to go. Honestly, with all the options available, I could make this last the whole reset of the summer…. hmm….
