James Street Gastropub & Speakeasy
I’m a little unsure about this place. I have very mixed feelings. Here’s why…
The upstairs bar at James Street Gastropub is AWESOME. AWE.SOME. It was HUGE so you didn’t feel like you needed to fight someone to get a seat and I didn’t have to wait an eternity to get a drink. And
this was DURING the Pens game. So, way to go with the sweet set up and the quick bar tending. They had a surprising amount of been on tap and in bottles. Unfortunately, the big chalkboard menu is
all the way to one end of the bar so it’s a bit of a hike to get a good look. Fortunately for me, I saw something right away that struck my fancy. Local brewmasters, East End, had a Coffee Porter out and it. was. tasty. Back to unfortunately, when we hauled buns downstairs to grab a table for trivia, and tried to order another round, we were told they didn’t have it? Seemed a little like they weren’t sure what was happening between floors. Then again, maybe they kicked it.
Because the Pens were
playing, we ordered a few of the “Specials”, which meant we weren’t eligible to use our City Dining Card. Kinda bologna if you ask me. No worries, the specials were $5 so we weren’t breaking the bank. We tried the Pork Nachos and

the Chili Cheese Fries. The nachos came out on a plate with round corn tortilla chips, cold pulled pork (was it supposed to be cold?) and unmelted shredded cheddar cheese (was it supposed to be unmelted?). It was as if I had gone home drunk one night and haphazardly made myself a midnight snack but gave up in the middle of cooking it because I was just too darn hungry to wait.
We had better luck with the fries. The chili tasted like Hormel from a can (is it homemade?) but the fries were drenched in it and the cheese was super ooey gooey. I may have eaten these all myself, sorry to my friends who may not have gotten any.
Wouldn’t have been a trip to the bar without something fried. One of my trivia companions ordered the fried veggies. FYI… just because they are veggies does not make them healthy. You know, because they are fried. What was supposed to be a mix of veggies turned to be all zucchini. No big deal, I like zucchini. They came with 3 different dipping sauces. I like choices. At one point I was dipping my fried zucchini into all 3 at the same time. Maybe I don’t like choices after all?
In the midst of the bar food, was this little gem. The side salad. Not your sad sack iceburg lettuce side salad with one tomato wedge and 2 slices of cucumbers. Oh no, this was a huge portion of field greens, peppered bacon and my personal favorite… candied red onion. I topped that off with Bleu Cheese dressing, obviously. Holy catch me by surprise delicious. So they had that going for them.
Also, the trivia was fun. Especially because I’m pretty good. Minus American Idol knowledge (which I’m actually quite proud of) and the Chinese Zodiac.
Anything I should go back and try? I hear their burgers are worth it?
