Looking for Bratwurst, knockwurst, baked ham, head cheese, blood sausage, and/or tongue in Columbus? Head to Thurn’s Specialty Meats. This fourth (and soon to be fifth) generation smokehouse has been smoking up a storm since 1886. And, production has picked up quite a bit in recent years as the push for locally-sourced meats has risen due to recalls of meat products.
We were fortunate to go behind the deli counter on a tour of the grounds, which includes stops in the freezer (where all sorts of smoked meats hung from almost everywhere) and the smoker, which was filled with Landjadger and hams during are visit.
After returning to the front of the deli counter (smelling like smoke), we able to try our taste buds on a few items, including ham, a variety of sausages, head cheese, and many other smoked goodies…
… including TONGUE (Laura was brave)!!
I’ll be back Thurn’s next time I’m in CBus. I need to try your beef jerky, as it is my all time favorite kind of meat.
