Even though it’s not technically Fall until late September, I was in the mood for a hearty meal last Saturday. I turned to Molly Brannigan’s Sheppard’s Pie. I’ve had some great Sheppard’s Pie… in Ireland. Nothing has come close to touching that experience including this.
The Sheppard’s Pie at Molly Brannigan’s was pretty traditional. It had seasoned ground beef, peas, carrots, herbs, and topped with mashed potatoes. It was paired with soda bread and the vegetable of the day, squash. If we gave stars at eatPGH, this dish would get one. The flavor just wasn’t there. The potatoes were dense and flavorless. They did at least avoid the oily layer often left by not draining the ground beef. I’m not sure who’s “favorite” this dish is but it definitely isn’t mine. But how can you compare anyone’s Sheppard’s Pie to one from an Irish Pub in Cork.
